Spain is an absolutely stunning location, with some truly incredible destinations. These areas tend to be quite popular among expats (with many living in Málaga, Marbella and other luxurious areas). If you’re looking for houses for sale on the Costa del Sol, you’ll be glad to hear that there are a number of options available to you. There are also professionals who can help you to find your dream home here, like our team at Luxury Property Finder Marbella.
There are some important factors outside of just purchasing some real estate, like the way of life or general living costs. However, most of those who are looking out for a property for sale in Spain should be asking themselves if they’ll actually need to learn Spanish.
Is it important to learn the language?
Most will find that they certainly don’t need to learn Spanish at all – in fact, most people can live a comfortable life without knowing how to speak the language. It is well worth noting that having at least a basic understanding of it could enhance your experience however, especially if you plan on relocating permanently.
Many Spanish people are naturally warm and welcoming, and they are often very appreciative of foreigners who try to make an effort with learning the dialect. You could easily impress the locals and make them feel more comfortable around you by familiarising yourself with popular words and phrases.
Doing so can help to overcome any minor language barriers that may arise. English is widely spoken here, but if you ever meet a Spaniard who isn’t too experienced with it, it could save you both a little confusion and hassle.
It’s far less useful on the Costa del Sol
In more multi-national areas, or places with large expat communities, knowing Spanish really isn’t too much of a big deal. In these areas, English is spoken by most people and you probably won’t need to use a word of Spanish as you go about your day. Living on the Costa del Sol without any Spanish is generally just as easy as living in any predominantly English location, which makes it a great place for a variety of people; whether they’re simply not interested, or are too shy to attempt conversing in a second language.
Is it difficult to learn?
If you are willing to take some time to get a better understanding of Spanish, you may wonder if it’s easy or falls more towards being difficult to learn. Some people find it to be quite challenging, not so much because of the vocabulary or sentence structure, but because Spanish people tend to speak incredibly fast. The good news is that if you’re interested in learning, taking lessons rather than playing it by ear is likely to be easier, but you can certainly pick up bits and pieces over time as you’re exposed to it.
There are quite a few factors that depend on you as a person, too. Some of the things that can make a difference to how easy and fast you learn are:
- If you already know another language (especially a language like French or Portuguese)
- If you’re in a Spanish-speaking community and are around the language
- If you start off at a younger age
Even if you don’t have any of these benefits, it’s still well worth learning Spanish anyway. Getting to grips with a new language can be very rewarding, especially if you’re in a location where you can put your skills to good use.
